Do you find yourself generally inspired or fascinated by one particular group of plants? Haven’t yet come across another person with your particular vegetative persuasions? Want to find like minded people to share information and plants with? If the answer is yes to any of the above, you may want to think about joining a plant society. And there is no better time to do that, than at the start of the new year, so you can take in a full, round the season, year of activity. Plant societies tend to be rather unassuming, this is because they take their inspiration from plants, themselves unassuming. Different ones offer different things – seeds, events, journals etc – but all have the same aim, to spread the word about the wonders of a particular set of plants. This set can be a group based on scientific classification (genus, family) or a habitat type (alpine), geographic region (Britain) characteristic (carnivorous), or horticultural style (cottage garden). They are always looking for new members, especially in the younger age ranges, to ensure their survival.
To give a flavour of each society we show their home pages below, a diverse range of morphological features they have too. Perhaps indicative of the amount of resources each has, some have more going on than others. Compare the Rose Society’s to Hebe’s; the latter is rather minimalist, but what it loses in polish, it makes up for in post-modern, retro cool. In fact anyone would think it had been designed by an art student. We love them all here, all doing their bit for plant-inspired digital design. What’s your favourite? It might be a sign to enlist.
