More Public Domain artwork, this time from the book ‘A monograph of Odontoglossum’ by James Bateman. Published in 1874 by L. Reeve & co., London.
Checking the current standing of the species names via the Catalogue of Life and The Plant List, it looks as if all the species illustrated below have been reclassified into other genera: Oncidium (those known as Cambria-type orchids), Rhynchostele, Rossioglossum, Cuitlauzina, Miltoniopsis and Cyrtochilum). DNA testing and then collaboration among scientists formed a new consensus on how these plants should be named and organised just last year. Previously Odontoglossum contained around 400 species, now there are less than 150. All these orchids are native to mountainous areas of tropical America but their offspring have spread far and wide. It is a group that has been cultivated widely, with thousands of hybrids created from crossing species within Ontoglossum as well as with orchids from other genera. What is produced is more of what we see here – stunningly beautiful flowers borne on a spike from a sort of bulb (pseudobulb) that vary in their colours and marking.
Odontoglossum comes from two Greek words – odon meaning tooth, and glossa meaning tongue. This is in referrence to the tooth-like projections on the bottom of the lip.
The plate name is written first underneath the image, in brackets is the name via the Catalogue of Life (or The Plant List where noted) and if a common name is known that comes last. Click image for full-size PDF file to download.
