Free plant art from the Temple of Flora

|Free Art, Painting

Free plant art today from Robert John Thornton’s (c. 1768–1837) “A New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Von Linnaeus – Part III”, a.k.a the “Temple of Flora”. These large-format plates were engraved by Thomas Medland in May 1798, from paintings by Philip Reinagle, with the book finally being published in 1807.  It was a botanical labour of love for Thorton – his attempt to show appreciation for the classification work of Linneaus. He has left us with 29 gratifyingly imposing plant portraits set against beautiful, often stunning background landscapes.

All artworks are in the Public Domain.
