Brooklyn based artist Eddie Perrote captures the essence and life-force of plants in his expressive, bright, chromatic Stoney Point Flowers series. In Vegetables and Cooking he mixes colour, lines and chaos to fun effect.
Stoney Point Flowers is a cut and dried flower wholesaler located in the beautiful countryside of southwestern Wisconsin. For this particular project I created paintings that reflected various seasonal changes in the crops that they have available, as well as in the environment in which they grow.
They provided a supply of beautiful photographs of seasonal flower crops to draw from as inspiration and imagery to include as contextual reference. I chose to approach the project as I do with most illustration, which is to do in-depth research into the topic, the aesthetic and imagery, and the general ambiance surrounding the topic.
Once I have a basis in the reality of what I’m illustrating I chose to create imagery that departs from the direct interpretation of the topic, and instead serves as an abstract representation of the idea of the subject. Creating a universal representation through abstraction rather than a specific representation of one particular plant – rather an idea of plants in a given season.
My approach to this particular project was to create imagery that was both painterly and graphic, using bold colors paired with soft, muted tones, and aggressively loose brush strokes to mimic the seasonal climate which I was representing in any given image.
